Philadelphia-based photographer Julia Blaukopf collaborates on projections for Rogers City Community Theatre’s Next to Normal

The winter musical this year was a unique production from Rogers City Community Theatre. It was dramatic rock opera Next To Normal. Next to Normal, the box office record-breaking drama, has incredible music and centers on a suburban family dealing with mental health. Suburban mother Diana suffers from delusions, and her husband Dan, who has been struggling with taking care of her on and off for the past sixteen years, their charming but unruly son Gabe, and their musician daughter Natalie show a compelling view of a family.

International artist Julia Blaukopf collaborated with director Katy Carignan on the projections for Next to Normal (seen above). The set, designed by Garrison Benson was as simple and striking as the images.

Next to Normal Projections and Set

Julia came to Rogers City and was able to attend rehearsal, read the script, listen to a run through, and photograph the area. These images were arresting projected behind such strong performances and added to the beauty of the show.

Audience members commented on how much they enjoyed seeing images from local points of interest like Seagull Point and how it made the show feel very real to them.
